For us at Amusingold, Qian Yang is one of the most promising young artists on the contemporary jewellery scene. Qian created her brand YQY Jewellery in 2003, and graduated this year from the London College of Fashion in Fashion Jewellery.
Passionate about sculpture and ancient cultures, Qian unites dexterity with artistic flair to give life to unique creations that swiftly become objects of contemporary art.
The Chinese designer borrows the Japanese technique of Kintsugi, which can be translated as ‘mending with gold’, a practice that consists of repairing second-hand ceramic pieces through the application of precious metals in liquid form. Qian chooses fanciful ceramic objects, applies cracks to the polished surface, and concludes the process by reassembling the broken pieces with 24-carat gold seams.
In this way, ceramic knick-knacks considered decisively kitsch acquire – thanks to artistic intervention and the preciousness of the metal used – a new aesthetic and a patina of glamour that’s truly irresistible. We are waiting to see what other surprises this talented jewellery designer has in store, but something tells us that this is just the beginning of a glittering path.
